The Central Halmahera Government held a virtual coordination meeting with relevant ministries and PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) to discuss the development of marine tourism across its small islands.
The meeting, led by the Regent and Deputy Regent, marks a strategic step in optimizing the region’s coastal and island-based tourism potential through sustainable investment. Several key islands, including Mor, Sayafi, and Liwo, have been identified as priority destinations, each with a distinct target market. Mor Island is projected to attract international tourists, while Sayafi and Liwo are being prepared for domestic and local visitors.
During the discussion, the regional government emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify the local economy, particularly amid the rapid growth of the industrial sector in Central Halmahera. Supporting infrastructure such as transportation access, road connectivity, accommodation, and proximity to industrial zones are seen as key advantages to accelerate tourism development.
The forum also addressed regulatory aspects, especially regarding the authority over the management and utilization of small islands. Representatives from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries outlined the legal framework and licensing procedures, including administrative and technical verification, environmental approvals, and business permits required for investors.
In addition, officials highlighted that marine tourism development must align with sustainability principles and provide tangible benefits for local communities. The initiative is expected to create new job opportunities, support small and medium enterprises, and stimulate economic growth in coastal areas.
As a follow-up, the Central Halmahera Government, together with ministries and IWIP, plans to hold further meetings to finalize planning documents and licensing requirements. The collaboration aims to ensure that future investments are well-structured and contribute to the long-term development of sustainable marine tourism in the region.
